Phew, this was the toughest year on the ground. So, with the season almost over we reflect back on our journey and what's happening soon to renovate the pitches.
Indeed it was a massively exhausting campaign thanks to the incessant heat and lack of rain coupled with a schedule close on 200 matches across both grounds.
It prompted tasks so different and demanding from any other year, especially watering and more watering.
Yet what's rewarding is that the decks didn't waiver and throughout were good cricket surfaces, consistently producing high scoring matches.
To achieve that required a whole year approach of winter work and intensive tlc through the season.
Ahead of next season we've already started by applying a liquid treatment to break down thatch, unwanted rotted vegetation under the surface, which if not addressed can cause erratic bounce.
Then, next week the squares will be cut to match height ahead of the contractors moving in.
They'll scarify (deep raking) by tractor and then apply the seed and cover with the big bags of loam currently piled on the boundary. Sounds simple but a tough, skilled job.
Then, it's over to us, to immediately cover with sheets to aid germination and protect from rabbits before the seed is then watered regularly.
Once shoots show a seaweed biostimulant will be sprayed to advance growth. Indeed seaweed was a huge influence and boost before and during this season.
Renovation of the ends is a concern as they're so worn and bereft of growth.
So, this year for the first time we're taking a new approach on these areas by applying a fertiliser designed for new growth.
The rest of the squares where there's still good root growth will get a separate feed that provides a more beneficial trickle of nutrition.
On top of this, at regular intervals through the winter both squares will be sprayed with seaweed to boost root growth along with a liquid aerator and root stimulator.
Added to all that we'll regularly brush the squares, a few times a week, and cut them periodically.
If all goes well by Spring the squares should be looking in prime condition again for cricket action.
